Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common type of infection in the body and affects the body's filtering system for removing liquid wastes. UTIs are common among women because they are susceptible to bacteria which attack the urinary tract. They are not as common in men, though they can be very serious when they occur.
Urine contains fluids, salts and waste products but is normally sterile and free from bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, an infection occurs when bacteria from the digestive tract cling to the opening of the urethra (the transport tube connecting the bladder to the outside of the body) and reproduce.
Although most UTIs are not serious, they are painful. Almost 50 percent of all women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime.
Sexual intercourse is a common cause of urinary tract infections. Bacteria in the vagina is sometimes massaged into the urethra by the motion of the penis during sexual intercourse. Sexually active women with multiple partners may experience bladder or urinary tract infections more often than those in monogamous relationships.
Waiting too long before urinating is another cause of UTI because holding off stretches the bladder beyond its capacity and can weaken the bladder muscle over time. A weak bladder may not discharge completely and the urine left in the bladder may increase the risk of a bladder or urinary tract infection.
Pregnancy, experiencing UTIs or bladder infections as a child, menopause and diabetes are other factors which may increase a woman's risk of developing UTI.
Studies show that drinking cranberry juice can help support a healthy urinary tract. However, the downside is that cranberry juice is loaded with fructose, a monosaccharide (simple sugar) that can potentially cause many health problems.
That is why natural health expert Joseph Mercola does not recommend drinking cranberry juice as treatment for UTI.
But you don't need to drink the juice to get D-mannose, the actual active ingredient that helps support your urinary tract.
D-mannose is a naturally occurring healthy sugar found in cranberries, peaches, apples, other berries, and some plants. For years, it was impractical to extract D-mannose due to its fairly high cost and production challenges. But Dr. Mercola has recently uncovered a practical source of natural D-Mannose without all the fructose and processed sugar.
Mercola's New and Improved D-Mannose is naturally extracted from birch and beech trees and does NOT interfere with your normal blood sugar regulation because it is not converted into glycogen or stored in your liver. New and Improved D-Mannose provides exceptional support for a healthy urinary tract. It goes directly into your bloodstream from your upper gastrointestinal tract so it's primarily filtered through your kidneys and routed to your bladder.
When you take New and Improved D-Mannose, almost every particle spills into your urine through your kidneys, literally "coating" your bladder and urinary tract to:
- support your urinary tract
- nourishes your healthy microflora (won't affect "friendly" bacteria)
- go to work in your system instantly
New and Improved D-Mannose does not contain any genetically modified organisms and is suitable for vegetarians as it also does not contain allergens like citrus, egg, gluten, milk, rice, sodium, soy, wheat, yeast, added sugars, starches, synthetic dyes, artificial flavorings and preservatives.
Spare yourself the discomfort of dealing with urinary tract infections without compromising your healthy blood sugar levels with New and Improved D-Mannose.

How long does D-mannose take to work?
Please refer to http://products.mercola.com/d-mannose/ for the answer to your question :)
D Mannose works in about 3 days and it is depends upon the type of infection that you have.
Some Doctors recommend that you take it every couple hours for the first few days till the symptoms of UTI subside.
I just bought D Mannose and thank God for it.
It worked in about 3 days.
I had some side effects such as; throbbing in the bladder area. I think that it was because the D Mannose was taking affect.
The symptoms of UTI have completely disappeared.
I recommend this product to anyone who has a chronic problem with UTI.
It is also good to take now and then as well.
There are many things that can prevent a UTI, D Mannose is one of them and it is the best product I have used to get rid of a UTI fast.
