Summer is all about enjoying the great outdoors with vacations, baseball games, picnics, camping and of course, trips to the beach. These are all fun activities but if there’s one thing that can quickly wreck your mood, it will probably be the sweltering heat.
So how do you beat the summer heat? It’s almost second nature for Americans to apply sunscreen before going out in the sun, largely because of the media’s exaggerated reports about the dangers of sun exposure, particularly, increasing the risk of skin cancer.
But did you know that many sunscreen products actually promote skin cancer? According to a study conducted by non-profit organization Environmental Working Group (EWG), an alarming 84 percent of sunscreen products contain many toxic chemicals that get absorbed right through the skin.
Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), the main chemical used in 90 percent of sunscreen brands to filter out ultraviolet B (UVB) light, kills mouse cells even at low doses and is particularly toxic when exposed to sunshine, natural health expert Joseph Mercola explains.
Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, a common ultraviolet A (UVA) light filter, was also found to have toxic properties.
Here’s a list of other dangerous chemicals that may be lurking in your sunscreen:
- Para amino benzoic acid
- Octyl salicyclate
- Avobenzone
- Oxybenzone
- Cinoxate
- Padimate O
- Dioxybenzone
- Phenylbenzimidazole
- Homosalate
- Sulisobenzone
- Menthyl anthranilate
- Trolamine salicyclate
- Octocrylene
If you see any of these ingredients on your sunblock or suntan lotion, it should go directly to the trash bin and not anywhere near your skin, Dr. Mercola warns.
Sunlight is good for you. It’s the best source of vitamin D, one of the most important nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy. Almost a million people die and contract serious diseases each year due to lack of sun exposure.
However, this does not mean that you can throw caution into the wind and get all the sun that you want. You should protect yourself from sunburn by using a sun protection product which is free from toxic, man-made substances.
Mercola recommends Natural Sunscreen, which uses 100 percent all-natural ingredients. Natural Sunscreen’s unique formula contains green tea, which helps protect your skin cells; and titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, natural minerals which deflect both UVA and UVB rays away from your body by forming a physical barrier without irritating or clogging your pores.
Natural Sunscreen also contains coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, glycerine, jojoba oil, lecithin, shea butter, sunflower oil and vitamin E. This perfect blend of botanicals delivers a pleasant scent without using any potentially toxic artificial fragrances.
Always put your safety first. Go natural when it comes to choosing skin care products.
